Wisdom teeth are late bloomers. They erupt years after your adult teeth at the back of your mouth. In some cases, they come in just fine, but sometimes wisdom teeth can cause problems. Fortunately, you don’t need these teeth to have a beautiful and functional smile.

If you’re lucky, and your wisdom teeth erupt without problems, you may be able to keep them. But if they cause trouble, we typically recommend extraction. In some cases, your dentist may suggest taking all your wisdom teeth, or it may be just one or two.

When Wisdom Teeth Cause Trouble

Often your jaw just isn’t large enough to support these late-arriving teeth. When this happens, you may experience the pain of overcrowding, or you may be vulnerable to infection with partially erupted wisdom teeth.

What to Expect During Wisdom Teeth Extraction in High Point, NC

Our High Point dentist first evaluates your wisdom teeth to see if they are coming in correctly. This usually requires x-rays. If there is a problem, your High Point dentist discusses it with you and plans the removal.

Before extraction, we make sure the area is completely numb. You may notice pressure during the tooth extraction, but it is unlikely that you will feel pain. The removal itself is straightforward and meticulously planned before the procedure.

After the anesthesia wears off, you may notice mild soreness and swelling. Your dentist can recommend a pain reliever. And we will also provide aftercare instructions to complement prompt healing.

Typically, instructions will let you know when to start on solid foods and advise you not to smoke the first day following removal. You should also avoid drinking through a straw.
