A dental emergency is never fun; in fact, it’s one of the more unpleasant situations you’ll deal with during your lifetime. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for you or a loved one to experience a severe toothache, knocked-out tooth, or other emergency.

So, if you live in High Point, Greensboro, or the surrounding area, what should you do when you need urgent help?

Is Your Situation a True Dental Emergency?

We often hear patients say they are unsure whether their situation is a true dental emergency. Certain situations require immediate care, and some can wait:

Signs of a True Emergency (Call Immediately!)

If you experience any of the following, contact our office immediately or go to the nearest emergency room:

  • Severe bleeding that doesn’t stop when you apply pressure
  • Facial swelling that makes breathing difficult
  • A high fever or difficulty swallowing
  • A broken jaw or head injury
  • A knocked-out tooth

Urgent but Not Life-Threatening (Call Soon)

If you experience any of the following, you should contact our office within a day or so to prevent further complications:

  • A toothache that improves with over-the-counter medications
  • A loose tooth
  • A cracked or broken tooth that doesn’t hurt
  • A lost filling or crown

What to Do Before You Get to the Dentist

Before you get to our dental office, you can treat many dental emergencies by taking over-the-counter medications for pain, placing an ice pack on your face for swelling, and rinsing your mouth with warm water to clean the area and remove any debris.

If you’re unsure about what to do, don’t hesitate to call us!
